What is it like to live in Ostrava? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

When I went for the first time to Ostrava in 2014 I didn't plan it too much. I have to say I was really surprised and enjoyed my stay. I came here again, in 2015. City for me is quite specific, industrial, really different from my hometown and maybe this is why I loved it so much. There are also mountains really close.

What is the student lifestyle like in Ostrava?

Quite good! Also have to say few words about ISC, student organisation, which is making our stay more fun and enjoyable. Every semester there are trips, integration weekend, dinners, parties, meetings, pub crawls, also Erasmus social (Erasmus in schools, Erasmus in zoo for example).

How much does it cost to live in Ostrava?

All my grant (400 euros per month) was enough to live my life in Ostrava.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ostrava? Is there any advice you can give?

Erasmus coordinator from my faculty helped with finding place on dorms. I was living in Koleje Vitkovice which I would recommend.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

You have to try tvaruzky and svickova! Without it you haven't been in Czech Republic... or more like in Ostrava, because tvaruzky is a typical regional cheese. I also recommend to try and kind of potato pancakes.

What places would you recommend visiting in Ostrava?

Zoo, Halda Ema, Dolni oblast Vitkovice... just typical stuff. Outside Ostrava... ask ISC about seeing sunrise at Lysa Hora, you will never forget this!

Is it good to eat out in Ostrava? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Yep, definitely, while restaurants are so cheap here! My favourite is U Zlateho Lva in Poruba. For nakladane tvaruzky there is one special place... Billiard Bar in Hrabuvka, but it's quite specific place, very local.

Is the nightlife good in Ostrava? Where is good to go?

I liked the most pubs recommended by locals, like Mirror, Les, Stara Arena.

What advice would you give future students heading to Ostrava?

Don't expect sunny winter, lovely beaches or anything like this. Remember that Ostrava is AN industrial city which can be also an advantage.
