What is it like to live in Ostrava? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Ostrava is a very specific city, because it has very specific industry history. But now, in 21st century, it is city full of great restaurants, clubs, pubs and bars, really cultural city with a lot of possibilities where you can go out and have a fun. One, but really big disadvantage, is unfortunately very bad quality of air.
What is the student lifestyle like in Ostrava?
I think, Ostrava gives lot of possibilities how to study there really comfortable. There are good offers of flats or another accommodation for quite good prices. It isn't a very expensive city (comparing with Prague or Brno). There are 3 libraries. a lot of shops,... everything what each student needs. People are friendly and they really like having fun and goying out with friends.
How much does it cost to live in Ostrava?
Accommodation is about 3000 (3500) CZK per month, about 500 CZK per month, food isn't so expensive (for example: bread costs about 30 CZK, milk about 17 CZK, frozen chicken cost about 65 CZK).
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ostrava? Is there any advice you can give?
There are a lot of offers of accommodation (in dormitories, students flats and so on).
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Meat and potatoes or rice, dumpkins, sweet meals, sauce, cabbage...
What places would you recommend visiting in Ostrava?
- Silesian-Ostravian Castle.
- Museum of mining.
- The Lower Area of VÍTKOVICE.
- Areas around Ostrava (castles in Hradec nad Moravicí, Raduň).
- Town Opava.
- Hukvaldy (the birthplace of Leoš Janáček).
Is it good to eat out in Ostrava? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
The prices aren't so high, so to eat sometimes out in Ostrava is quite good. My favourite restaurants are:
- Paleta restaurant.
- U Peciválů at Stodolní street.
- U Rady.
There are quite lot of pizzerias too.
Is the nightlife good in Ostrava? Where is good to go?
Nightlife is perfect. A lot of music clubs, bars, pubs. Stodolní street is very famous.
What advice would you give future students heading to Ostrava?
Ostrava is perfect place to combine studying with great entertainment, experiences and fun.
