Erasmus Experience in Ostrava, the Czech Republic by Maitane
Why did you choose to go to Ostrava, the Czech Republic?
It's in central Europe so you can travel a lot and besides it's cheap.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I was there for 5 months and I got €350 a month from the European Union and something more from the Basque Government.
What is the student lifestyle like in Ostrava?
It's the best thing about Ostrava.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Ostrava to other students?
Yes, absolutely. The city isn't pretty and there's not much to see, but the residences are super good fun.
What is the food like there?
Czech food isn't very good, but there are a lot of cheap restaurants with all different types of food. I recommend U Jarosu (it's next to the Poruba residence) and Jack's Burger Bar (in the centre).
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Ostrava?
No, the university gave me a place in the VSB Poruba residence.
How much does it cost to live in Ostrava?
The residence costs €100 a month, depending on the room you get, and then there's what you spend on food, parties, travels and beer. It's all very cheap.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?
Czech is very difficult, you'll only be able to learn the basics. There's a weekly Czech class given at the university.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Ostrava from your home city?
Flying from Bilbao to Prague and then take the train to Ostrava.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Ostrava?
The bars at the residence on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Stodolni on Fridays and Alexandria on Saturdays. There are other parties that get organised, too.
