What is it like to live in Olomouc? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I love this city so much:it's big enough to have a lot of things to do here, but it´s small enough at the same time, so you get anywhere by foot. After Prague, the capital city, Olomouc is the second largest monument reservation in the country, which makes it very beautiful and interesting. Besides, although Olomouc is famous for it´s student life, it´s quite a peaceful city.

What is the student lifestyle like in Olomouc?

Because of the Palacký University, there is a lot of students from all over the world. There are ideal conditions for students in Olomouc - pubs, clubs, festivals, cheap university canteen (actually, students have everything cheaper than "normal" people, for example transport - trams, buses in Olomouc - costs for students 450, - Kč for 3 months)...

How much does it cost to live in Olomouc?

Euro is circa 27 Czech crowns (Kč). I don´t know what about student dorms, but flat 1+1 is about 6000 Kč/month (you can get shared flat from 2000, -Kč/person). Concerning food, bread costs about 20-40 Kč, beer costs about 10-15, and entering a party costs 0-50 Kč... Simply said, it's a cheap country

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Olomouc? Is there any advice you can give?

There is a district full of dorms, but I´ve heard they´re very small.. You can also rent a flat.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Czech cuisine is very heavy and fatty. Soups, Dumplings, sauces and meat are typical for our cuisine. And a beer, of course!

What places would you recommend visiting in Olomouc?

There are many things to see here, for example Saint Wenceslas Cathedral, the square full of fountains, the Holy Trinity Column, and the Olomouc astronomical clock, but it´s not beautiful at all... Concernign entertainment, I would recommend the laser game, park, Svatý kopeček, the museums, etc.

Is it good to eat out in Olomouc? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

If you want to taste the Czech cuisine, I recommend the Moravian restaurant, but it´s really expensive for us (it's just for rich visitors) but you can eat well in M3 restaurant, Michalský Výpad, and Hanácká. I also like a pub under the ice hockey stadium (don´t be shocked, but the stadium is very old and hideous).

Is the nightlife good in Olomouc? Where is good to go?

Yes, it is. The best club for students is the Belmondo club. Every Wednesday there is a party for Erasmus students, every time different style (like Spanish, English,... ). But parties are here also every Friday and Saturday (but it´s full of 16-years old boys and girls). Quite good is also the Liquid music club, 15 minutes Club, Varna... maybe Mexx club, but it´s quite bourgeois for me.

What advice would you give future students headed to Olomouc?

Czechs are suspicious and rude sometimes, but we are not bad people. Most of us can´t speak English very well (sorry for my mistakes in this text), but we can use our hands, legs and imagination! Be patient with us, please.. and let elders sit in trams and buses.
