Olympia 2

The areal of Olympia is actually quite big: The gymnasion, palestra and many temples cover much space. You see the remains of the columns ... what's missing is also the roof and the paint.

Olympia 2

The most famous temple in Olympia, the Temple of Zeus, hosted a statue of Zeus in ivory and gold made by Pheidippides, one of the Seven Wonders of the World in ancient times. It's not here anymore, but images of reconstructions were there and a re also online if you care to see what it must have looked like ... majestic!

The remains of the Temple of Hera (the wife of Zeus) are here: A round temple, not quite as big as the main temple, but still important.

Olympia 2

After passing a gate, here it finally is: The Stadion where the famous Olympic Games took place for eleven centuries until they were forbidden! Of course, our group could not resist, and we did a foot race - barefoot! I got in third, but some of the others did a headstart so maybe the result would have been different ... anyway, it was fun!

After that, we saw the museum. Come back tomorrow for more!
