Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka
Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka
It is a wonderful city located in the central part of the island. This is one of my favourite spots in Sri Lanka due to the cold climate. Sri Lanka is a tropical island, but the climate of each part differs from one to another. The coastal area has a tropical climate all year along, but in the upcountry side it is cold and it is perfect for a vacation.
During the colonization period, this area was recognized as an appropriate place for tea due to the perfect weather conditions. Still there are lot of tea estates and tea factories which produce high quality tea for the export market. Travellers have the opportunity to visit tea factories and enjoy high quality tea products. It is famous for both black and green tea as well as for flavoured tea.
The nature and the environment is different from the other area of the country since it contains beautiful waterfalls, mountains, forests etc. My favourite part of the journey to upcountry side is visiting waterfalls and bath there. People can bath in these waterfalls but it is bit cold. The traditional way of getting water from waterfalls for day today use namely wathura pilla, is quite unique to this area and hard to see in other areas in the country. If you are interested in bathing in a waterfall my advice is to pay attention since at some part of the areas of some waterfalls are prohibited to use for bathing and swimming.
This area is very famous for orchid flowers, roses due to the perfect climate. When you go there you can see lot of tea estates, flower farms, vegetable farms and dairy farms. Lot of people used to sell flowers beside the road for tourists and local travellers.
Lot of hotels and Bungalows are available in this area. But all the time, I prefer to book a bungalow for one or two weeks since it is cheap and more convenient.
If you go during Sinhala Hindu new year season which is the new year period for Buddhist people, you can enjoy lot of traditional Sri Lankan sweets and traditional games.
If you have an idea to go to Nuwara Eliya I would like to suggest some places that you should visit.
- Adisham bungalow
It is located near Haputale. It was built by Sir Thomas Villiers who was planter and the former chairman of George Steuart Co, in 1931. This bungalow has designed according to Tudor and Jacobean style in huge area. During the later periods, it was converted in to a monastery by the Roman Catholic Church. In the present days, it houses the Adisham monastery of Saint Benedict and contains a relic of St. Sylvester at the chapel.
When I went there I had the opportunity to enjoy homemade jam, cordials and other type of foods. I bought some of them for relatives.
- Hakgala Botanical Garden
It was established in 1861 with the inspiration of cultivating Cinchona. But later, with the introduction of tea it became an experiment of tea cultivation. Then it was turned in to botanical garden in 1884. From that time onwards, lot of tropical and typical plants were grown in the garden including beautiful flowers. This is an amazing place for a picnic and romantic date.
- Lake Gregory
It was built in 1873 during the period of William Gregory. It is a perfect place for picnics and paddle ridding, boat trips, pony rides along the shore, water walking balls, watersports such as jetskis, windsurfing and etc. Most of the travellers used to take their lunch during the journey in this place. You can easily reach to this place and the lake is also one of the landing location of amphibious aircraft belonging to the Sri Lankan Air Taxi service which provides scenic domestic flights in Sri Lanka.
