Meemure, Sri Lanka
This beautiful and isolated place is located in between Kandy and Matale, and the natural beauty of the spot is hard to turn in to words. This place emphasizes the traditional village lifestyle of the Sri Lankan people. You can visit paddy fields, cinnamon and cardamom cultivation... In the old days, this village was dependent of agriculture but later, since the start of eco-tourism they started to receive some income from visitors as well. You can visit the eco-friendly houses made with clay and coconut tree leaves in this area.
The history of the village goes back 5000 years, to the era of king Ravena. Lakegala is the famous place behind the story of Ravena, since people believed this hill had a tunnel inside, and it was the secret hiding place of King Ravena.
In this spot, the history runs from, the era of Prince Vijeya and his wife Kuweni, to 1505, which corresponds to the colonizing period. In the colonizing era, they used this area to get resources such as gunpowder.
This area is surrounded by small hills, natural pools, caves, waterfalls and lots of vegetation, and most of the flora and fauna is unique to Sri Lanka. So, if you like trekking, swimming, nature and bird watching, then this is one of the best places located in the small island.
When I went there with my university friends we parked our vehicles a bit far, so we had to walk crossing paddies, hills and forests while we discovered beautiful sight sceneries, waterfalls and natural pools. After a while, we could not even find signal for our phones.
We booked a campsite inside this area. It was an amazing experience to spend days without internet connection, phone signal, proper electricity, while enjoying the natural beauty in first person, swimming freely in the natural pools, enjoying traditional Sri Lankan meals and sleeping in tents. And it was totally filled with adventure. In addition, the guide of the camp offered us guidance to visit the places and provided facilities for camp fire, barbecue and jungle trekking.
Even though we booked a camp site, there are other types of accommodations such as bungalows, cottages, resorts... You can select whichever you prefer for a great price.
The price was reasonable for the camp site where we stayed, and they provided meals for us. But I must say, that you should get your power banks charged before you go there, since we did not have as many electricity facilities there. Besides that, trekking shoes, mosquito repellent and night lights are highly important if you are going to stay in a camp site.
To finish, be careful with the insects and other small animals, which may sting you causing bigger health issues. However, I am quite sure they are not that harmful, since I did not experience this kind of problem during my stay. But, it is better to acknowledge it before going to the field. I highly recommend you to avoid the rainy seasons. The danger increases and you will not be able to enjoy the waterfalls and natural pools. Nonetheless, if you are going to swim, be vigilant at all times, since the water level might increase at any moment.
