Shady terraces, succulent meat, velvety mousse: these are the things that come to mind when I think of Le Tracteur. Just a ten-minute drive from Uzès, this elegant French restaurant triumphs over all its rivals, thanks to its exquisite menu, idyllic setting, and shabby-chic décor. It was a holiday favourite when I used to stay with friends and family in the nearby village of Saint-Maximin. Now, it remains but a sweet memory, and yet I am quite sure that if I returned there with my former travel companions, the staff would recognise us, just as they did each summer when we rolled up for our first meal of many.
About the place
Book yourself a table at this paradisiacal spot, and treat your taste buds to an unforgettable journey. Delve into seafood salads, drizzled with oil and herbs, or crunch down on the oats of a deconstructed crumble. Slice into a cut of tender beef, or munch on marinated sardines. Expect the very best, and get even better. Accompany your meal with a generous glass of wine – the congenial waiters will be more than happy to offer their recommendations – or enjoy abstinence and opt for some divine pressed fruit juice. The pear one is particularly moreish.
After your meal, have a wander round the site, and admire the various art installations on display. Head inside the converted caravans to see contemporary sculptures from across the globe, or pop into the car park to admire the rusty red tractor that gives the restaurant its name. Be sure, too, to poke your head round the inside of the restaurant to meet the chef, and see food being prepared in the open-plan kitchen.
