My Erasmus Experience in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England by Juliette

Why did you choose to go to Newcastle Upon Tyne, England?

My university in France had a partnership with Northumbria University in Newcastle. My initial exchange with Athens fell through at the last minute, so I was lucky enough to be able to fall back on Newcastle Upon Tyne which still had a few places. I don't regret anything!

How long's your stay? What financial aid do you receive?

I stayed for 6 months, from January to June. I received an Erasmus grant which helped me live happily! My family also helped me to pay rent.

What's the student vibe like in Newcastle Upon Tyne?

I was staying in an international student residence. There was a great solidarity amongst the students and thus, beautiful friendships were born. The connection with the English students wasn't as warm. The night life in Newcastle plays a big role in the city and is really good!

Would you recommend the city or university to other students?

I would recommend Newcastle for its geographical location as you can easily and quickly visit Scotland, it's near an airport, its city centre is really nice and there's so many students who live there!

What's England's food like?

Although I missed French food, I appreciate all new culinary experiences! I ate English specialities as often as possible! English breakfast has become a tradition for me! It is also actually possible to eat like at home (France) too.

Was it hard to find accommodation in Newcastle Upon Tyne?

I found my accommodation really easily thanks to this service Northumbria University provide. You just fill out this form where you choose your favourite accommodation style from different university residences. I chose an international residence so I ended up sharing with 3 Chinese, 1 Indian, 1 Sri Lankan and 1 German student.

What are living costs like in Newcastle Upon Tyne?

Accommodation is a bit more expensive than in France. Do not expect somewhere luxurious.

What's it like learning the language there? Did you take part in a language course organised by the university?

During the first few weeks you're just learning to get comfortable with the language, and you progress really quickly. I unfortunately didn't do a language course whilst I was there, but I didn't have any issues passing my exams and the teachers are very available and accessible to help you.

What's the most economical way to get to Newcastle Upon Tyne from your home town?

Flying is the most economical way; by getting your ticket in advance, you can get a return ticket from Paris for around 80€ with EasyJet. If you don't live near a capital city, it might be worth seeing if getting a train to London, to then fly to somewhere closer to your city is actually cheaper, quicker or just easier.

Where do you recommend to go out in Newcastle Upon Tyne?

At the start we'd go out and ask English people where to go- there's always students in the streets to ask! It all depends on the night so for example on Tuesdays it's International Night at Floritas and on Thursdays everybody goes to Liquid... Don't worry though as there's always somewhere to go out- go and see what they're all like!

And to eat in Newcastle Upon Tyne? What are your favourite places?

McDonald's is open 24/7! There's also the Habita Students' Bar which is really nice. If you're really hungry, there's the Gekko international buffet at The Gate with for only £4. 99 with your student card.

And what cultural places do you recommend going to see?

The Baltic Museum, Newcastle Castle and St James' Park (a stadium) in Newcastle. If you have the chance to travel, then I suggest using Megabus to go to Edinburgh.
