Erasmus Experience in Newcastle Upon Tyne, the United Kingdom

Why did you choose to go to Newcastle Upon Tyne, the United Kingdom?

It seemed important to explore a city in the United Kingdom and just to learn English, but to also get to know a totally different culture. Besides, the city of Newcastle is a very lively city, where you'll never get bored (art galleries, monuments, lots of shops, the coast, loads of places for going on nights out).

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

My scholarship lasted 10 months and I got €600 a month.

What is the student lifestyle like in Newcastle?

It's great, there are loads of students from all over the world, especially from Asia. What's more, there are a lot of European students enjoying their Erasmus experience here.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Newcastle to other students?

Yes, my university was Northumbria University and they organised a lot of events for the exchange students with the Students' Union (trips, parties, etc. ).

What is the food like there?

Well, the food is one of the United Kingdom's weak points, fish and chips... hmmm. But Newcastle isn't an especially expensive city and you can find good food for a good price.

How did you find accommodation there?

Thanks to the Accommodation Office at Northumbria University (they send you all the information you need and the process is really easy).

What are the accommodation prices like? How are the prices in general?

The accommodation prices are high, but with the current Erasmus grant, you can afford it no problem. The prices, in general, aren't very high (bearing in mind that you're in England).

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?

I didn't go on a course, since I was studying English Philosophy, but there were free English courses for students.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Newcastle from your city?

Low cost flights. I would recommend flying with EasyJet, it's better than flying with Ryanair.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Newcastle?

Tup Tup Palace, Nancy's Bordello and to the parties that the university puts on at the campus "Venue".

And to eat in Newcastle? What are some of your favourite places to go?

Pizza Hut and, in general, all of the usual fast food restaurants that you'd find anywhere in the rest of the world.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

The area with the bridges is really, really pretty (the quayside), the art galleries (like the Laing), visiting the castle, the Discovery Museum, visiting the little towns along the coast, the nearby cities (Edinburgh, Durham, etc. ), visiting Hadrian's wall.
