Erasmus Experiece in Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom
Why did you choose to go to Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom?
Because it is a region I was not familiar with and wanted to discover.

What is the student life like in Newcastle Upon Tyne?
The Geordies (people who live in Newcastle and surrounding region) are experts in the matter. Themed nights out, fancy dress, a never ending choice of bars and clubs...
Themed nights out and fancy dress are very popular amongst the students
Would you recommend the city and University of Newcastle to other students?
Of course! The accent is funny (but you can understand it very well! ), the people are welcoming, plus it's not far from Scotland so you can take advantage of the proximity and visit this super country!
What is the food like in this country?
Good, but you shouldn't be expecting a great gastronomy, but then again I don't think you should be choosing a destination soley for its food!
How did you find your accommodation?
I was in student halls (Lovine Hall), with shared bathrooms and a communal kitchen. It was small but nice and clean.

What are the rent prices like? And the general cost of living?
Quite high (around 1600 euros for 4 months)! If I were to re-do it, I would opt for a shared flat as I think those are less expensive!
What is the language learning like? Did you do a language course offered by your University?
I did an 'applied language' course, which consisted of speaking and translation classes. The relationship between the teachers and students is different than that of in France, they are a lot closer to the students, which I would say makes for a more enjoyable atmosphere. I loved the classes (by the way, I had 9 hours of lessons per week).

What is the cheapest way of getting to Newcastle from your town?
I was living in Newcastle, on campus. A five minute walk to the town and centre and metro stop, ideal!

I will leave you to discover that for yourself, but for certain there is no shortage of places to party in Newcastle!
The nightclubs in Newcastle are popular with students, the locals, and even celebrities!

What about eating out in Newcastle? What places would you recommend?
Nancy's Bordello! Go there! Lovely decor, tapas, salsa nights and a pub quiz on Sundau. Original and cheap meals at student-friendly prices.
And what cultural activities do you recommend?
- You should go and see at least one Newcastle football match, for the atmosphere.
- The museum of contemporary art, which is called 'the Baltic' is great!
- Grainger markets!

Do you have any advice for students coming to Newcastle Upon Tyne?
Have fun! Don't hesitate to befriend English students as this is a better way of improving your language skills as opposed to socialising with only Erasmus students (although it's important to do that too!).
