Blog: Big in US
Tags: flag-us Erasmus blog New York, New York, United States

Hello all!

I was 21 when I faced the opportunity of visiting the USA due to a University Scholarship. New York state’s pretty city, Rochester was my hometown for almost 1 month. Accurately, Campus of Nazareth College, Rochester. The course I applied for was a 3 week intensive English language course, established and held by Nazareth English Language Institute (ELI). I got admitted with two other girls from my univeristy. If You want to know what’s the whole background of the story just please continue reading.

I first saw the advertisement of the programme at the university. My faculty sent an e-mail to every student about this project. The brave and lucky 3 of us, who got admitted, were supported by scholarships, and gained a big financial support. If Your faculty does not have any contact with Nazareth College, and haven't heard about ELI's language programmes, that means, that You won't receive any kind of support by Your university, but You can still apply. Because every Student can apply from all over the World. Of course without being supported by an institute, the costs of the journey are higher, but if You want to fly over the ocean and live the American dream for 3 weeks or more, than with some student jobs, a little money from the family for Christmas, or by living Your student life consciously, You will be able to put away some money.

Near the financial background You’ll need to fulfill one more condition. The following: Your native language must be different from English. Sounds simple, right? ELI’s annual programme schedule is available on the internet, moreover, You might find useful advices and informations at this web site.

I attended a three week summer programme in July. The session was held between 10-30 July, 2015. Since I applied through my Uni, I had to attach a cv, cover letter, transcript of my grades, and documents which certificate my realizations, activities, civil work and successes as a student. If You're applying by Your own (without university background), than You will need to fill a long and detailed application form online which asks You about Your studies, goals and personality. The registration process for the summer course sessions starts at the end of April.

Thousand of students are studying or have been studied at Nazareth College with different scholarships, entering in different projects. When I was there last year, I met some students from Saudi-Arabia who got admitted to a 6 month course, so You can choose whatever programme You want, because there are more kind of English-language programmes in different time-intervals.

When I was at Rochester, the students in my group were from UPC (Lima, Peru), Univerdiad de Concepcion (Concepcion, Chile), Semmelweis University (Budapest, Hungary), and some others from Nepal, China, South-Korea, Belgium and Mexico. Some of them applied by themselves, getting no aid from any school/university/institute. Traveling 7053 km far from home, toward the unknown, to the place I saw only in the movies, to my new family, a great multicultural mass. It couldn't be else, but the journey of my life. Keep on reading my following posts, and find out why I said this...
