Experience in Nairobi, Kenya by Filia
What is it like to live in Nairobi? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Nairobi is a fast paced city. Vibrant and diverse. One neighbourhood in Nairobi can be so totally different from another in terms of culture and cost of living. And sometimes the divide is literally a wall or a few meters. You can find a slum right next to an affluent and prime area.
However, living in Nairobi is an experience like no other and many are reluctant to leave if ever they have to. There’s never a dull moment, whatever one’s preferences in terms of eating out, dancing, music, arts,, shopping, sites, sights and sounds etc. I’d recommend it any time, any day.
How much does it cost to live in Nairobi?
Honestly, living costs in Nairobi largely depend on the neighbourhood, and then if one knows where to find bargains. Nairobi has the upper class prime and affluent areas like Karen, Runda, Muthaiga, Kitisuru, the upper middle class areas such as Kiliman, Lavington and Westlands, lower middle class areas such as South C, South B, Eastlands, Woodley, Langata and the slum areas such as Kibera, Mathare and Kangemi.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Nairobi? Is there any advice you can give?
Good accommodation is rarely affordable in Nairobi. But once found, it’s often worthwhile in terms of amenities and most importantly, security. Securit and proximity to one’s school &/or place of work is usually key factor in order to avoid wasting hours in traffic.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food? Oh well, it rather depends on one’s palate I’d say. In my opinion, Francophone and Mediterranean folk take a bit of getting used to our foods. I enjoy cooking and have made a few converts though, to a few of our dishes.
