Murcian lifestyle!
Before going on my Erasmus to Murcia, I didn't even know where exactly it was. Somewhere in Spain, yes, I heard the name... a small, insignificant city... It was the only choice that my university offered me for doing my Erasmus in Spain, which was my country of preference, because of the language.
I must say that my experience in Murcia was amazing. Absolutely wonderful, the time of my life that changed me as a person and revolutionized my views on life. It sounds serious, I know... But hey, I got to know a new culture, full of life, many people from all over the world and spent 6 months in a beautiful city!
I will tell you a little bit about Murcia
It is a small city at the south-east of Spain, a region where the weather is sunny all the year round. It rains so few days a year that you can count them on one hand. The summers are incredibly hot, even Spanish people try to hide from it. The winters maintain the wonderful temperature of around 15 to 20 degrees. And it has a beach, 50 mins by bus from the city centre, not big, but beautiful and not full of people, just how I like it.
Prices
The prices are higher than from where I come from, but since it is a small city, they are still not as high as in Madrid or Barcelona. You can find a room in a shared flat for 200 euros a month or even less if you are lucky, and the costs of living are also between 200 and 300 euros.
Party? Never stops
Murcia is a very popular city among the Erasmus students, there are hundreds of them, so don't worry - you will never be alone. The city is also very safe, so there is no problem to walk alone at night. I recommend you to go to such clubs like Badulake (no entrance fee! ), Teatro Circo or Teatre (this one is a bit expensive and more fancy, but it's worth it).
Transport?
Murcia has buses and only one line of tram, that will take you from the main square - Plaza Circular - to Espinardo, the university campus area. You can buy a public transport pass, valid both for the buses and the tram, for around 20 euros a month (if I remember correctly! ).
As for the airports, Murcia has one airport in San Javier - it is quite impressive, because when the plane lands you are able to see the beach from the window. I absolutely loved it. There is also an airport in Alicante, much better connected, and there is no problem with getting to the center of Murcia. There are buses going out every hour from the airport that take you to the main bus station in the city center of Murcia.
If you need any help, look for the Instituto Hispanico, the organization that helps Erasmus students and organizes events and trips for them. There's also Erasmus Life Murcia or ESN Murcia. They are really nice people - they will help you find a flat, a language course and basically anything you need.
And don't hesitate to ask me - I will also try to help you with any questions you might have.
Have a nice stay in Murcia. It will be an experience that you will never regret!
