A typical night out in Murcia

Whenever I go out in Murcia, the evening usually follows the same pattern... First of all is the Botellón (what Spaniards call meeting up in a park or another to have pre-drinks). The Botellón is now banned, but pre-drinks continue on in the apartment before going out. The night out generally starts at around 10. 30PM as dinner is rather late, at around 8PM.

Many Spanish people drink cubatas (a mix of alcohol and a fizzy drink). Personally I am more used to drinking beer, being Belgian which means I drink Clara con limon (beer with lemon Fanta) or even mojitos. They have spirits like in Belgium, such as Malibu and Pisang... And what mustn’t be forgotten is the giant ice cubes - Very important, especially in the Summer!

If the Supermarket is ever shut when you want to buy your drinks, you can always go to a 'Chinese' shop (they are called this because most of the time they are kept by Chinese people). It corresponds to our Belgian Pakistani shops... Kept by... Pakistanis... However be careful, selling alcohol after 10PM is prohibited so it is better to bring a backpack to put the bottles in.

Next, at around 2AM (yes, everything is done late here), we leave for the centre, towards the tascas (straight roads with plenty of bars), situated to the right of the Merced (university). They have bars to suit every taste including: the Revolver for concerts and a few special beers (la Mort Subite for a Belgian cherry flavoured beer), Contra Corriente for Spanish rock music, the Temperatura for a gay bar ambiance, Ladrillo for metal/rock... Facing the Merced, outside of the tascas, there is another important meeting place where Badulake is (an Erasmus bar with international music, chupitos (shots) at fifty cents and cocktails at five euros) as well as Clave for Spanish and international rock music; the street for the genre of Badulake for adults..; ) Vintage has been recently added but I haven't been yet.

In regards to the central clubs, you have to go to the road la Puerta Nueva, to Boutique (six euros entry. If you are lucky you can get in for free with a bit of negotiation) and Illuminata (also six euros entry). The music is international but the people are slightly tedious in the sense that the men hit on you a lot and are quite aggressive... That's why I personally prefer bars with rock music to the clubs.

However if the two previously mentioned clubs aren't for you, you can go to an area called Atalayas near the La Flota. Often entry is free. Sometimes there are Chippendales and that sort of thing. The other area is called Mariano Rojas near the la Avenida de los Pinos. There are many clubs, many with electronic music.
