Erasmus Experience in Münster, Germany by Patricia
Why did you choose to go to Munster, Germany?
I was interested in learning German and out of the German cities that my University offered me, it was the one that caught my attention the most. It's a rather small and welcoming university city.
How long does the grant last? How much money do you receive as aid?
The grant that I was awarded was for 10 months and I recieved more or less 400 euros a month.
How is student life in Munster?
The student ambiance is stupendous. There are many, many students and there are always activities and things to do.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Munster to other students?
Of course. In my case, I extended my stay for 6 more months as a student of Free Mobility.
How is the country's food?
After living abroad for a while, I have realised that there is nothing like Spanish food. Here in Germany, they eat a diet based on potatoes, sausages, meat and salads with different sauces, to give flavour to the insipid food they have. By any means, you can always cook something tasty at home.
Was it hard to find accommodation in Munster?
I got my accommodation through the Studentenwerk of Münster, which is the office responsible for giving residences to students. I applied for it on the internet, in plenty of time (because as there are many students if you don't do it in advance it's difficult to find anything), and months later they assigned me a room in a residence close to my campus.
How much does it cost to live in Munster?
Because Munster isn't a big city like Berlin or München, it is considerably cheaper. I would say that with accommodation included, you could live for 500, 600 euros a month, depending on whether you live in a residence or a flat.
How is the language? Did you go to any course at the University?
The language is rather complicated. I advise you to try to separate yourself a bit from the Spanish, of whom there are many and in the end, they only end up speaking Spanish to eachother. I attended classes that the University offered for free to the Erasmus and I tried to mix more with the Germans.
What is the most affordable way of getting to Munster from your city?
I normally fly with Ryanair, from Malaga to Düsseldorf Weeze or to Münster Airport, which they have newly established this year and it's very well priced.
Which places would you recommend to go out to party in Munster?
There are many bars and clubs to go out to in the city. It all depends on the atmosphere and on the type of music that you like. I always usually go to drink beer at Cavete, Blaue Haus or Destille and to party, at the Schwarzes Schaff, Cuba Nova or Salsomanio, which is a Latin pub. Heaven and Amp are also good, but they are further out of the centre.
And to eat in Munster? Can you name your favourite places?
The university cafeterias (also called Mensa) are very good to eat at during the week. There are 5 spread out over the city and they are very well priced. For something more for with friends during the weekend, you can go to places such as Vapiano, Extrablett, etc. which aren't very expensive and the food is good. The first one is an Italian and the second is more American type food.
And as a cultural visit?
The city centre is the historical centre, with its characteristic architecture and churches. Everything is very beautiful and worth of visiting.

Any advice that you'd like to give to future students in Munster?
I would advise you to start studying German as soon as possible. In this way, you can better adapt to German culture and people.
