Experience in Morelia, Mexico by Jennifer
What is it like to live in Morelia? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It's a very beautiful city and there's a lot of things to do there. Even if you do get bored of the city, you can visit nearby places, which are full of culture, like Pátzcuaro and other municipalities, Michoacán is actually the state that has the most Magical Towns in the Republic of Mexico (Pueblos Mágicos de la República Mexicana).
What is the student lifestyle like?
It depends on what kind of school you're at there, if it's public or private. The former has the most enrolment, since it's free, at least in this state, so there are less in private schools. The academia is good at either type of school, and how you approach it depends on who you are as an individual. Regarding the academic level, they're both usually good, the difference is that your percentage of attendance matters more at the private schools than it does at the public schools.
How much does it cost to live in Morelia?
The lowest rent you can pay there is $1000 a month, plus $200 for bills every two months, the cost of transport depends on how far you have to go and by what means of transport; currently, public transport costs $7 per journey, which you pay every time you take it. And for food, it costs between $80 and $100, maybe a bit less, it all depends whether you make your own food or if you always eat pre-prepared food.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Morelia? Can you give any advice?
It wasn't difficult, and there are often advertisements for places to rent up around the universities, or you can look nearby the universities by yourself and, generally, there are a lot of rooms or houses available to rent. I'd advise you to look for a place to live near to the university, since, even though it is more expensive, you'll save just as much money and time by living there.
What is the food like there? What are some of your favourite dishes?
The food is very good, each state has their own typical dishes, corundas are the dish from Michoacán, they're definitely delicious. Something that never fails you and rarely doesn't taste good are their quesadillas and stews. You can also find places that serve some small local dishes, like pozole, sweet and savoury tamales, Oaxaqueño tamales, enchiladas placeras, huchepos, tacos dorados. Antojitos like gazpacho, which are really typical of Morelia, vasolotes... and loads of other foods.
Where would you recommend to visit in Morelia?
The centre of Morelia in general, since it's designed with visual finish, that is, if you stop at any of the streets you can see a church at the end of each one. The constructions in the city centre have been built from pink stone. On Saturday nights between 8:30 and 9:00 pm, the cathedral is all lit up, it's worth watching a thousand times.
Other places you can go to other places like the bandera lookout point. You should visit the Santuario de Guadalupe, which is better known as San Diego, in front of which is a street by the same name. If you like shopping, there are the shopping squares Altozano, Las Américas and Plaza Morelia.
And to eat in Morelia? What are some of your favourite places to go?
You'll find places to eat at in any of the commercial squares in the city. There are also some great places, but it can be quite hard to explain exactly where they are, since Mexican people love tacos and you can find tacos in a lot of different places.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Morelia?
Towards the Altozano region, a residencial area, there are a lot of trendy places where the majority of people there go, currently the clubs here are "Sense", "Roof" and "Cocktail". There are also some places in the Boulevard area where there are a lot of people. And if you're into going to bars, most of them are in the centre.
Do you have any advice for students coming to Morelia in the future?
Despite what you might see in the news, Morelia actually a place that is really worth living in/visiting, so you should give yourself the chance to experience life here yourself.
