Experience in Maynooth, Ireland by Dan Doherty
What is it like to live in Maynooth? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Maynooth is a very safe place to live as a student and the local students are friendly. I would highly recommend Maynooth to every kind of student.
What is the student lifestyle like in Maynooth?
Maynooth is a small university town, so the student community is a very big part of the town's community. After a while, you will realise that you share a lot of mutual friends with everyone on the campus because it's such a friendly community.
How much does it cost to live in Maynooth?
Rent for students in Maynooth is usually €400-500 a month, which should include all extra bills (Ireland is expensive to live in). But there are shops near the campus, like Aldi, that are cheap for groceries and very popular among students, and Manor Mills Shopping Centre. There is a Lidl that is cheap too, but further away from the campus. There is also a Polish grocery store called Mróz that is very cheap and it's just off Main Street.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Maynooth? Is there any advice you can give?
I have not personally searched for accommodation in Maynooth, so I'm not sure, but because it's a small town accommodation is limited and it can be difficult to find accommodation.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Ireland is not famous for particular dishes but we have very high-quality products which you can make really tasty dishes with. When you're here you will have to try things like Clonakilty black pudding and Guinness too. Food is of very high quality in Ireland. The Irish meat is particularly delicious since the cattle graze in extensive green fields, resulting in tasty meat. Milk has a different texture too—it's creamier.
What places would you recommend visiting in Maynooth?
Maynooth Castle gives free tours and the grounds of the castle are very nice. However, the tours only start up from the warmer half of the year around April/May to September. Then we have the Carton House, which is a famous country house that is now a luxury hotel. You are free to walk the grounds and it's beautiful at all times of the year. And of course, Maynooth University's South Campus is stunning. It houses the facilities of St. Patrick's College. One of the main buildings of St. Patrick's College is the chapel. If you get the chance, try getting into it.
Is it good to eat out in Maynooth? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Maynooth has some really good restaurants such as Donatello's (Italian restaurant), Picaderos (Spanish and Latin American restaurant) or Bistro 53 (Bar & Grill + Mediterranean food). The three of them are on Main Street.
Is the nightlife good in Maynooth? Where is good to go?
The Roost (a pub) on Thursday nights is great and Brady's Clockhouse (another pub) on Wednesday nights is really good too. There aren't too many nightclubs in Maynooth, so you'll get to know them all very well. Dublin, however, has countless nightclubs and it's an hour or so away from Maynooth by bus.
What advice would you give future students heading to Maynooth?
As an Erasmus student, you will have no problem making other Erasmus student friends but it could be difficult to make Irish friends in a classroom setting. The best way to make friends in Maynooth is by joining campus clubs and societies. All of this will be made clearer to you on your open day.
