Sandra's Experience in Malaga, Spain
What attracts you to living in Malaga? Do you recommend it? What's it like?
Malaga is the typical city to start a new life if you had the chance. Apart from its never-ending summer, it is a place with diversity, from beaches to museums. You can combine cultural tourism with leisure very easily.
What's the student lifestyle like in Malaga?
Truthfully, there isn't a huge university atmosphere as such. The city has a lot of tourist attractions which means it is always full of foreigners. The best uni student atmosphere is in the Teatinos neighbourhood.
How much does it cost to live in Malaga?
Malaga (after Seville) is the second biggest city in Andalusia and that means the prices are higher. Flats usually cost around 200 euros a month and student accommodation is a lot more expensive than that.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Malaga? Do you have any advice?
No. It wasn't difficult to find accommodation because there are lots of notices online and at the university.
My advice is to start looking for a place to live about a month before you move to Malaga. Then you can look at the kind of thing you want from what is available and then you can decide.
What's the country's food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Spanish gastronomy is incredible. If you are a lover of seafood and fish, Malaga is the place for you. The classic tapas is great too.
What places do you recommend visiting in Malaga?
The Castle of Gibralfaro, the cathedral, the Pompidou Museum, the Russian Art Museum, the Thyssen Museum, the Alcazaba, the English Cemetery, and Pedregalejo, just to name a few.
What about eating out in Malaga? What are your favourite places?
Any place that does tapas is good. Especially in the centre of the city, there are thousands of places where you can enjoy a variety of dishes and great food.
Where do you recommend for nightlife in Malaga?
Andén, Cabaret, Wengue, Liceo. If you just want to go for some drinks I recommend "La Plaza Mitjana" or "La Plaza de la Merced".
Do you have any advice for future students in Malaga?
Enjoy your year there; don't leave without seeing everything, and take advantage of all the opportunities that arise! From eating at the beach on a Monday to doing a foreign language conversation class in a cafe in the city centre...do it all!
