Paloma's Experience in Malaga, Spain

What attracts you to living in Malaga? Do you recommend it? What's it like?

I have always lived in Malaga and I personally think it is a fantastic place to live. I recommend my city because it has all the perks of being the capital city of the region, but at the same time isn't especially big so you can get around the city reasonably easily. The people are relaxed and welcoming, so it is easy to feel at home here.

What's the student lifestyle like in Malaga?

Quite good. The university is pretty big and the atmosphere for nightlife and to explore the cultural side of the city are both great. The city has a lot to offer, with different options and prices, and there are lots of bars, galleries and museums that offer discounts to students of the university.

How much does it cost to live in Malaga?

Malaga is quite cheap. There's lots of variety so if you do a thorough search you won't find it difficult to find places at good prices.

What's the country's food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Gastronomically speaking, Spain is one of the best countries on an international level. It has immense gastronomic cultures and traditions. It's difficult to say what my favourite dishes are. If we're talking about traditional dishes, you can't go to Malaga without trying the fried fish and sardine skewers (sardines traditionally cooked on a bamboo skewer and presented in a boat). Another of my favourite dishes is "gazpacho", which is a typical dish of Andalusia.

What places do you recommend visiting in Malaga?

I recommend visiting Malaga's beaches and parks, especially La Batería Park...it's beautiful! The CAC (Centre for Contemporary Art) is amazing and usually has really interesting exhibitions if you're into modern art. If you prefer something more traditional, you could also visit Picasso's Museum, the Revello de Toro Museum, or the Thyssen Museum. The towns around Malaga are also worth visiting, such as Nerja and Torremolinos in the Rincón de la Victoria area. You could take a day trip to any of these places - they're definitely worth going to for the beaches.

What about eating out in Malaga? What are your favourite places?

In Malaga, it is a very common custom to eat in beach bars. I especially like the bars in the El Palo and Pedregalejo neighbourhoods. Also, in the neighbourhood of Echevarría del Palo there are lots of little beach bars where you can enjoy tapas at a good price.

Where do you recommend for nightlife in Malaga?

In the centre of Malaga, there are lots of good clubs and bars, and there's something for all tastes in music. I personally like rock music so when I go out I go to Lado Oscuro on "Calle Álamos" (Alamos Street) and also to Rockin' on Calle Beata (Beata Street). There are also places which have recently become very popular in the town of Los Álamos in Torremolinos.
