Javier's Experience in Malaga, Spain
What attracts you to living in Malaga? Do you recommend it? What's it like?
Malaga is a city that is full of life and which I have the pleasure of living in. I totally recommend it if you like good food, good weather and lastly and most importantly, great people.
What's the student lifestyle like in Malaga?
Malaga has a very diverse student environment. There are bars with all types of music, from rock to jazz, salsa dancing and normal nightclubs where your ears bleed from the music. Basically, there's something for everyone.
How much does it cost to live in Malaga?
Renting flats costs around 170-300 euros depending on what neighbourhood you live in. For example, in the Teatinos neighbourhood, a flat costs around 200-250 euros (excluding water and electricity). But on the other hand, you can usually find places in the centre for cheaper (e. g. 170-250 euros).
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Malaga? Do you have any advice?
Not at all, I moved straight into the Alberto Jimenez Fraud University Accommodation where I spent two years. After that, I knew the city well and decided to move into a flat in the Plutarco area (Teatinos).
What's the country's food like? What are your favourite dishes?
This is not a question that can be answered with one or two responses. The Mediterranean diet is the best in the world, without a doubt. Whatever you order, even the cheapest dish on the menu will be a thousand times better than any cheeseburger.
What places do you recommend visiting in Malaga?
Take a stroll along Pier One, the town "Los Alamos", the Alcazaba and "La Noche en Blanco" (The Night in White), which is a cultural event for performances, exhibitions and concerts.
What about eating out in Malaga? What are your favourite places?
Any tapas bar. I also recommend El Refugio (Teatinos) and La Bodeguita (Teatinos).
Where do you recommend for nightlife in Malaga?
The centre of the city... always!
Do you have any advice for future students in Malaga?
Don't stay in your rooms all the time like rats, go out every day and discover the nooks and crannies of the city - the places that only those who are lost will find. Enjoy the beaches and the mountains, the people and the museums. You won't regret it!
