Erasmus Experience in Malaga, Spain by Beatriz
Why did you choose to go to Malaga, Spain?
I didn't, there was a mistake with my Erasmus process and I ended up in Malaga but I like to think Malaga chose me, it was not me that chose Malaga.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
5 months 280 €/month
What is the student lifestyle like in Malaga?
College is not good but the rest is amazing. People have a lot of work from college and sometimes you feel like ur not making the most out of Erasmus because you have so much to study.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Malaga to other students?
The city is cool, Spanish people have amazing and much fun. The fine arts college is good if you are in a degree related to digital things like graphic design or multimedia. If you are studying sculpture I do not recommend this college to anyone, there is too much burocracy to use the spaces and you have to buy every single thing that you need. Theoretical classes are awesome.
What is the food like?
Amazing obviously. You will go back to your country with +10 kg because you will be eating and trying amazing food all the time.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Malaga?
A bit but not too much, there are a lot of scams and overpriced houses, I ended up choosing to live with locals.
How much does it cost to live in Malaga?
About 500/600 €
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Like, if you are Portuguese or Italian it is easy if your are German or British probably not... It depends. I believe there are language courses although I didn't attend to any of them.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Malaga from your city?
Flixbus.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Malaga?
The most popular places are near plaza Uncibay or plaza de la Merced, if you like a more artistic and cultural environment I advice you to go to La Polivalente and La Térmica.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Malaga?
Maison Casa Lola, Pepa & Pepe, La Relojería.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Too many. There are more than 30 museums and a whole bunch of independt galleries and cultural spaces. You must see La Térmica.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Malaga in the future?
Do not expect people to speak English, they don't. Food is great and fresh, whether is great, if you have the chance to know locals and hang out with them do that, this is a very touristc spot so if you hang out with the locals you'll meet cool cheaper places. Enjoy the culture here. Also make sure before renting a house that it has good conditions, 250-300 € is the usual price for a room. I'd say Facebook is the best way to find accommodation.
