Chechu's experience in Málaga, Spain

What do you think of Málaga as a place to live? Do you recommend it? What's it like?

It's a great place, where the weather is fantastic all year round. It has everything a student could wish for. The people are really nice and the city centre is a symbol of its economy.

How is the student life in Málaga?

The university environment is very good, it mainly spans across two areas, Teatinos and the city centre. During the week Teatinos becomes a perfect place to go out on the terraces and enjoy a cheap drink, while on Thursday and the weekends the city centre is the ideal place to party and dance. As for the university, its campus is quite sparse and under construction, something that should improve once the metro line is completed.

How much does it cost to live in Málaga?

In Málaga you can live comfortably with 350-400 euros a month, to split between rent, food and travel. If you are asked for more than 200 euros to rent a flat in Málaga, you are being fooled. As when I was a student there, I paid 150 to 175 euros in rent, living in areas like La Chapa and calle Victoria.

Did you have trouble finding accommodation in Málaga? Do you have any advice?

Finding somewhere to live is very easy with webpages such as:

If those don't help, you can go to different departments on campus which are filled with adverts. My recommendation is to see as many flats as possible before settling on one, there are real bargains at great prices. My friends lived in Teatinos and paid 180 euros, they had a residential swimming pool and everything.

How's the country's food? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is great, the main attraction in this area is the fried fish and above all, the anchovies. Delicious! As well as this, there is also the 'Mediterranean diet' and many local products.

What are your favourite places to eat in Málaga?

There are many fantastic places to eat in Málaga. Whether you are looking to stuff yourself, try food from other cultures or vegetarian food. They are local, like the Mediterranean next to calle Álamos, Pizza Pino near Malagueta beach that occasionally has buffet prices, and Peggy Sue near the cathedral. There are cheap places where you can eat well and quickly, all of which are near teatro Cervantes, Pizzas del Cervantes, Madre de Dios, etc.

Which places do you recommend for partying in Málaga?

I recommend starting the night with tapas in places like El Tapy or 100 Montaditos where the prices are cheap. Then later continue the party in Shamrock, Alquimia or Velvet, which are bars with good prices and no entry fee. If you want a place to dance and you are willing to pay entry, the perfect place is Andén.

Any advice you would like to give to future students in Málaga?

You can live very well in Málaga, without much money. There is always 'predrinks' at someone's house. I also recommend going to Torremolinos, specifically during the festival period and to los Álamos beach, where you can relax and listen to good music whilst on the beachfront.
