Erasmus Experience in Mainz, Germany by Laura
Why did you choose to go to Mainz, Germany?
Mainz is the perfect city for university students. It has a small city centre where you can walk without any traffic jam problems.
I chose it because it is near (30 minutes by train) to Frankfurt, the biggest city around Mainz, so I thought: when I will be tired of Mainz (although, it never happened, believe me), I could go somewhere else, somewhere bigger.
What's more, the Campus is huge! You can get lost in it! And you can find everything you need for your university within walking distance of 10 minutes!
What is the student lifestyle like in Mainz?
The student lifestyle is awesome! There are parties every week, at least 3/4 of parties are organised by University's associations (such as AsTa, or Erasmus Team), but there are also parties in many clubs in the city! Each Wednesday you can join the party in every club for free!
The city is fairly small, you can meet your university colleagues even during your jogging session!
Would you recommend the city and the University of Mainz to other students?
Absolutely! The university has a big canteen, so you can stay there with no need to go out of the Campus! There are libraries in every building! There problem of crowded libraries does not exist!
Professors are very nice and friendly, you can call for their help every time you need it! Also the Computer Room is very well furnished, with printers and scanners!
What is the food like?
The food is delicious! There are many cheap supermarkets nearby, less than 20 minutes walking! And even more restaurants or cafés in which you can try every kind of Torten!
Was it difficult to find your accommodation in Mainz?
The Erasmus Team helped me with that. You have to fill in a form (online) and they will give you the best flat! There are so many "Studentwohnheim" that you can just pick one and have fun!
Each has a "Hausmeister" that can help you with you day to day problems in the flat! There are also guys who are there just for helping Erasmus students (if you have problems with German).
How much does it cost to live in Mainz?
About 400€ a month + the price of the rent.
Important! You're expected to pay a fee at the beginning of the year: it includes services at the University as well as bus, train and S-Bahn tickets for all the region!
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Mainz from your city?
You can reach it easily by plane, there are two airports: Frankfurt Hahn or Frankfurt International.
What cultural sites are there to visit?
There are so many! The Dom, Museum of Carnival, Gutenberg Museum.
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Mainz?
Just have fun... and genieß die Stadt!
