Erasmus Experience in Mainz, Germany by Kawthar
Why did you choose to go to Mainz, Germany?
Hi, I basically study in France, and I come to Mainz to do an internship for my master Thesis.
I chose this city because I found a good lab that is working on a subject that is interesting for me and they are making good progress in this field.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My scholarship is for around 6 months: it only covers my rent.
What is the student lifestyle like in Mainz?
I don't know if I can tell about student life here, since I am not really studying here. But I can tell you, as an intern who doesn't speak German, that there are a lot of people here who speak English, and this helps a lot. In some places, like administrative places, they only speak German, so you will definitely need a German friend to translate. I am lucky to have a very helpful colleague.
But in general, people here are nice and offer to help you before you ask, so don't worry about this part.
Students have free transport, and they are also free to do what they want in their rooms (party, for example, decoration... ) as long as they give it back as it was.
What is the food like?
I like food here, it is tasty and you have a large choice of what you want to eat.. there is a different menu every day. There are also meals for vegetarian people.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Mainz?
Finding accommodation in Mainz was not easy for me. It seems that the dorm does not accept students who are not enrolled in Mainz uni. It depends if you are lucky to find a free room, since people move out sometimes in the middle of the term.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Mainz from your city?
To travel, you can book in advance a train ticket or you can go by car, it is cheaper.
Would you recommend to go on a night out in Mainz?
Yes, at night it's also safe.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Mainz?
Well, food here is good everywhere... just a little bit salty.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The Old City.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Mainz in the future?
There is an International Office for foreign students; they can help you.
You should know that there are also students that offer their help in the dorm... to show you the city, where to go shopping and so on, so try to find them.
