Nerea's Erasmus Experience in Madrid, Spain
Why did you choose to go to Madrid, Spain?
I chose to come and study in Madrid for a couple of reasons: first, because it is the capital of Spain; second, because it's a city with a lot of charm and has lots of things to do on a daily basis; and finally, because it's a city where the fun never stops and there is always something new to do. There's something beautiful about losing yourself in the streets of Madrid, visiting all of its museums, and walking around the entire city. The people here are really friendly. Madrid is a perfect city for students.
How long does your grant last for? How much money do you receive as financial support?
I actually didn't have a grant because I am Spanish and I only came to Madrid from Valencia.
What is student life like in Madrid?
Student life here is fantastic as there is always something to do: the universities always organise some kind of event, and the students always organise parties all over the city. They welcome you in the best way possible.
Would you recommend the city and your university in Madrid to other students?
I would absolutely recommend the universities in Madrid, and the city itself even more. They are both perfect.
What is the food like in Spain?
Like in all cities, you can find any and all types of food here, as there is a big mix of cultures. So, you can find things ranging from the most typical of dishes from Madrid, like calamari sandwiches, to restaurants with Asian and Greek cuisine, for example.
Was it difficult for you to find accommodation in Madrid?
Truthfully, it's not that difficult to find accommodation in Madrid. The only thing that I would say is best is living a little further away from the very centre of the city because it's a lot cheaper. But, the accommodation itself is usually very good. For me personally, the best thing has been to share a flat with others, be it with people you know or with strangers.
How much does it cost to live in Madrid?
It doesn't cost as much as people think it does. It's a city where there are more things available for you to do, so it's normal that you spend some money. But, usually, everything is relatively cheap. For your accommodation, you could pay anything ranging from 150€ to 400€ (per person, per month), depending on which area you are situated in. Food costs the same as it would in other places as the supermarkets are the same. And for everything else, there are many offers and discounts so that you can have a good time in the city without spending lots of money.
What is the cheapest way of getting to Madrid from your city?
By AVE (high-speed train) or by plane. Although, now there is also the option of BlaBlaCar, which is becoming more popular.
Which places would you recommend for nightlife in Madrid?
You can choose from a variety of options. If you like going to bars and pubs most, I recommend that you go out in the Malasaña and Chueca neighbourhoods - you will love them. On the other hand, if you prefer going to nightclubs, there are several in the city, like Zoológico, Kapital, Roccoco, and Gabana. There are lots of places to choose from. I also recommend going out for a drink at one of Madrid's amazing rooftops terraces.
And eating out in Madrid? Can you mention your favourite places?
There are lots of places, so I couldn't choose just one. In reality, there is a wide variety of restaurants in the city.
And cultural hotspots?
- Puerta de Sol
- Plaza España
- Templo de Debod
- Palacio Real
- Any of the art museums in the city
Is there any advice that you want to give to future students in Madrid?
You should come and study in Madrid because you are going to love it!
