My Erasmus Experience in Madrid, Spain by Clémence

Why did you choose to go to Madrid, Spain?

I like the Spanish culture and I was hoping that my Erasmus experience would be in a Hispanic country.

How long's your stay? What financial aid do you receive?

I'm here for 5-6 months and I receive 700 euros from the Erasmus grant.

What's the student vibe like in Madrid?

It's a really student-filled and Erasmus friendly city! There's lots of other French and Italian students, there's Erasmus nights out all the time and lots of opportunities to house-share with Erasmus students and people of different nationalities.

Would you recommend the city and the university to other students?

Of course! It's a superb experience! Living costs are really decent and it's a city full of bars!

What's Spain's food like?

Woah! The food really is incredible! Tapas, tapas, and more tapas. You need to try every single one!

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Madrid?

It took me one morning!

What are living costs like in Madrid?

Madrid is more expensive than other Spanish cities, except for Barcelona, but it's still cheaper than France.

What's it like learning the language there? Did you take part in a language course organised by the university?

I could already speak Spanish before I went.

What's the most economical way to get to Madrid from your home town?

By plane! Ryanair and Easyjet have really good prices.

Where do you recommend to go out in Madrid?

The Malasana and Huertas areas.

And to eat in Madrid? What are your favourite places?

• El Tigre,
• Lateral,
• La Sureña tapas bar.

What cultural places do you recommend going to see?

Toledo, Andalusia (especially Seville) and Barcelona.

Enjoy your Erasmus experience, it's one of the best exchanges in Europe!
