Manuela in Spain: My Madrid Experience
What is it like to live in Madrid? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Madrid is the perfect place for everyone as there are areas that adjust to the every age’s needs. The suburbs are perfect for families with kids whilst the city centre is full of life and there is always something to do, people to meet or a party to go to. What’s more, whether it’s winter or summer, it is always a good time to go outside and go for a walk or do some sport.
What is the student lifestyle like in Madrid?
The city is very much a student city. There are loads of places to go and things to do, giving you the chance to have a great time, meet new people, and do it all without spending too much money.
How much does it cost to live in Madrid?
You could just about get away with €800 for living, especially if you share an apartment and know where to shop and which places to go out.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Spanish food in general is amazing. Whether it’s tapas, paella or ‘una mariscada’ (seafood) you will always be able to find something delicious and not too expensive. You’ll easily fall in love with the food on offer.
What places would you recommend visiting in Madrid?
El Retiro, The Temple of Debod, the city centre (Plaza de Sol, Plaza Mayor), the museums (which all have varying interesting exhibitions), Gran Via, Fuencarral, the zoo etc. In reality, there are loads of things you can go and see in Madrid.
Is it good to eat out in Madrid? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
‘Copas Rotas’ is really good value and always a good place to grab a bite to eat and have some cheap drinks on a Friday night. There is also ‘El Tigre’ or ‘EL Cabañon’, whilst ‘Volapié’ too does really nice food. ‘Lateral’ is a bit more expensive but really tasty and if you like sushi then ‘Maki’ is the perfect place as the food is really nice and really good value.
Is the nightlife good in Madrid? Where is good to go?
‘Malsaña’, ‘Bilbao’ and ‘Fuencarral' are all good places to find loads of different bars and things to do on a night out. ‘Huertas' is also a good place to go, and in ‘La Plaza de los Delfines’ there is always a good atmosphere. ‘Capital’ is worth going to at least once as well. It’s a huge club with 7 different floors including karaoke, a cinema and all sorts of different music.
What advice would you give future students heading to Madrid?
