Leonela's Experience in Madrid, Spain

What attracts you to living in Madrid? Do you recommend it? What's it like?

I think it's a good city to live in. I recommend that you don't stay in the tourist centre because there's a lot of noise all the time. However, there are places outside the tourist centre that could still be considered quite central, with all services nearby and is ideal for accommodation.

What's the student lifestyle like in Madrid?

It has a good student atmosphere and is a cosmopolitan city that welcomes students from all over the world, which allows you to meet and live with people from different cultures, making the experience very interesting.

How much does it cost to live in Madrid?

This depends on lots of factors. The central areas will always be a bit more expensive, but on average it's possible to rent a room in the range of 300/350 euros (can be a little more or slightly less depending on the area). The transport pass for Zone A costs around 55 euros, and a monthly food shop would cost about 200 euros for one person and you wouldn't have to skimp on anything. You'd also have to factor in any meals out or going out at night to party, other tourist activities and how often you do them.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Madrid? Do you have any advice?

The biggest challenge for those who want to rent a flat for themselves is that most owners ask for proof of a job. However, maybe if you offer a few months rent in advance it might be possible to negotiate another agreement. The Rentalia website is quite useful and there's also a Facebook group called "Rent apartments and rooms in Madrid" where you can talk to lots of people who need accommodation and also to people offering accommodation who will also explain the requirements.

What's the country's food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The country's food is good. In general, the food involves a lot of fish, seafood, potatoes and fried eggs, as well as ham and chorizo. However, it is possible to get a great variety of foods from all over the world in shops and restaurants.

What places do you recommend visiting in Madrid?

Madrid has lots of historical and cultural monuments, such as Prado, Reina Sofía, Archeological, Templo de Debod, numerous fountains, Puerta de Alcalá, Almudena Cathedral, etc. You can also leave the stress of city life by spending a day in the Retiro Park. There are also lots of places to visit on the outskirts of the city to get away from the hustle and bustle.

What about eating out in Madrid? What are your favourite places?

My favourite place is Tommy Mels because there's a lot of variety and the food is pretty good. Calamari sandwiches in the Plaza Mayor are an icon of the place and definitely worth trying. Other places like "100 Montaditos" or "La Sureña" are ideal to go for a beer and spend time with friends. Not forgetting the worldwide, famous fast food chains like KFC, Burger King and McDonald's.
