Experience in Madrid, Spain by Nour
What is it like to live in Madrid? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Madrid was one of the best experiences I ever had. The city is so much alive, you find young people everywhere! It's probably not the best city to visit as far as architecture and landscape but it sure is one of the best. You can always find something to do, you can never get bored. The city is full of cheap restaurants and bars, nice parks, entertainment services... it is just amazing! and for those who are interested, bureaucracy is not that tough.
What is the student lifestyle like in Madrid?
My experience was in UPM. I had average and good professors. You learn a lot at university but still have to work more by yourself. But you always have time for a couple of drinks after. Considering that in Madrid you can find a lot of international people, the nightlife is crazy!
How much does it cost to live in Madrid?
Housing costs around 400 euros (single room in shared apartment) as an average. Public transport's monthly cost is 35 euros for under 23, and 55 euros for 23 and above. Grocery and basic shopping is quite cheap.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Madrid? Is there any advice you can give?
It's not difficult because it is very common to share rooms and apartments in Madrid. You can even find studio apartments that are affordable.
My advice would be think well enough before choosing a place and be aware of scams. Never pay anything before seeing the room!
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is good, mainly international food that we are all used to. But the traditional food is very good (paella, tortilla, empanadas, gazpacho... ). Tapas are the cheapest source of food for students.
What places would you recommend visiting in Madrid?
All touristic places. Malasana and Sol are very nice areas for a night out.
Is it good to eat out in Madrid? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Hell yes!
- El Tigre: a restaurant where you order your drink and you get a lot of free food as tapas
- La Bicicleta: a coffee shop where you can experience the international ambiance.
- El museo del jamón: very cheap.
You can always find local bars that serve cheap and good food.
Is the nightlife good in Madrid? Where is good to go?
"Kapital", "Gabana" and pub crawls in Sol area: you just stand there and you'll see some people approaching you and giving out their offers.
The best way to have a night out is to start with a drinking gathering in someone's house, and then at around 12:30 am go out to a club
