Experience in Madrid, Spain by Marta
What is it like to live in Madrid? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Madrid is like living in a constant craziness (in the good meaning of the word) you never know what will happen, there is always something to do, you never know when the day will end, maybe after some tapas dinner in one of our mercados, or partying until 6 a. m.
And in the morning, Rastro!
What is the student lifestyle like in Madrid?
Having cultural opportunities everywhere, me, as a arts student, I couldn't be happier to have one of the most important museums of fine arts in the world (El Prado), or Reina Sofia, or Thyssen but also infinite galleries and book shops...
Also the underground and bohemian street life in the Malasaña, Chueca and Salesas streets.
And of course, never forget the parties.
How much does it cost to live in Madrid?
As a person who has travelled around Europe, I would say much cheaper than Paris, London, Germany... but more expensive than Poland, Hungry, Romania... So it's more or less in the middle.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Madrid? Is there any advice you can give?
Find a shared flat!
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I don't know if it is because I am a foodie or what but food might be one of the best parts of Madrid (Spain in general) gastronomic culture is strong here and if you avoid touristy places then you will find precious gastronomic gems.
What places would you recommend visiting in Madrid?
All the museums, alternative and secondhand shops around Malasaña, Botanic garden, the top of El Circulo de Bellas Artes...
Is it good to eat out in Madrid? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Sure! I can recommend tapas places like "Casa Carolo" (street Barquillo, in chueca) Going to "San Miguel market", or small places around that area.
Also recommend "Ojala" for beer and sandwiches (plus it has a beach inside).
Is the nightlife good in Madrid? Where is good to go?
Just go out and explore! If you like metal and heavy rock music I would recommend Bajos de Arguelles area, or if you are more into indie, electronic, alternative... then Malasaña will work for you.
What advice would you give future students heading to Madrid?
Get lost as much as you can and enjoy the city.
