Experience in Madrid, Spain by Glenn Arthur
What is it like to live in Madrid? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I would recommend Madrid because of it's charm, and I always tell people, "Barcelona is better for visiting, but Madrid is better for living". The city is the capital and cultural centre of Spain, and its central location is also great for travelling around and discovering the rest of the country.
What is the student lifestyle like in Madrid?
Great! There is definitely a huge student community, and it's easy to find a group and fit in.
How much does it cost to live in Madrid?
It must be one of the cheapest European capitals, though there are even cheaper places in the rest of Spain. Northern Europeans won't have any problems though.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Madrid? Is there any advice you can give?
Accommodation is incredibly easy to find in Madrid... in August. After the first few weeks of September it gets harder and harder. I can't stress enough how important it is to have an Apartment in August already. In October it'll be impossible.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is particularly amazing because given Madrid's centric position, you can get all types of Spanish food here: Catalan, Basque, Galician... but also food from around the world, in case you miss home.
What places would you recommend visiting in Madrid?
Many... but the museums are of particular interest, the Prado and Reina Sofía. The Retiro park is good, but I like hanging out at the Debod temple better.
Is it good to eat out in Madrid? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes! I don't have any particular spots, but I typically eat a menú del día, and then I have some light tapas for dinner.
Is the nightlife good in Madrid? Where is good to go?
The nightlife in Madrid is great because it has one of the most walkable centres I've ever seen. You can get around really easily and there are always lots and lots of options to choose.
What advice would you give future students heading to Madrid?
Start the flat search early, and don't be intimidated by Spaniards, it's hard to get to know them because they are as intimidated as you are! But Madrid is really open and there's a place for everyone.
