And it has a wide and safe public transport system to travel in.

It is typical spanish, but if you are a vegetarian or just not like spanish omelette you can eat other kind of food from different countries such us indian, japanese or chinese food. There is really plenty of choice.
What places would you recommend visiting in Madrid?
Firstly, I would go to Casa de Campo and board in a famous cable railway and then watch the Almudena cathedral and Orient Square gardens. Also you can take a walk along Sabatini gardens and Madrid Rio. Also, you can visit the Prado museum and Reina Sofia museum and travel by touristic bus along the Castellana avenue. You can visit Atocha and Retiro Park as well.

Yes, of course. If you go with the intention of having a nice time and enjoy with your friends it is a perfect place to hang out.
What advice would you give future students heading to Madrid?
Firstly, plan with time the stay and your visit to places. Secondly, I would ask every question I had and try to be polite to local people because surely most of them would be available and helpful if you need.
And try to join a sport club or something similar beacuse it gives you many opportunities and ways to be assisted.
