Experience in Madrid, Spain, by Diego

What is it like to live in Madrid? Would you recommend it?

It's an amazing place! Everybody is always out and there's always something new to do: the selection of leisure activities is varied and appeals to all tastes. It's an extremely tolerant city.

What's the student life like in Madrid?

There are plenty of events for students, and even though they aren't university-organized activities, the student presence is felt.

How much does it cost to live in Madrid?

I can't really provide a first-hand account, however rent in a shared flat in close proximity to universities tends to cost around 250-300 euros monthly. Then you just need to add around 40 euros in transport and 200 euros in food.

Was it difficult finding housing in Madrid? Would you have any advice?

No, I've been living there since I was a child.

How is the local food? What are your favourite dishes?

It's the best in the world. The gastronomy is healthy, varied and delicious. It may sound typical, but I love paella, a good cocido madrileño in the Winter and going out for tapas with friends...

What sites would you recommend visiting in Madrid?

The entire city centre: The Madrid de los Austrias, the Royal Palace, Sol, Opera, the Plaza Mayor, getting lost in Malasaña, Chueca, Gran Via, Plaza de España and the Templo of Debod.

If you have time I would even recommend going to visit nearby cities, such as El Escorial, Alcalá de Henares, Segovia and even Toledo; which are all within one hour from Madrid.

And what are your favourite places to eat in Madrid?

Franchises such as 100 Montaditos, La Sureña, El Mercado Provenzal and Burger Lab, which are some of the cheapest places to eat and drink.

Where would you recommend going out at night in Madrid?

Depending on the music and vibe that you prefer.

Do you have any advice for future students going to Madrid?

Enjoy the city and soak in the ambiance in the streets.
