What is it like to live in Madrid? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Source

Madrid is a city to live experiences. I recommend it a lot. It has a huge cultural offer and there's always something going on and something to do or go. The city centre is beautiful but it's not its best thing. The people, the night life and the vibe that surrounds the city are.

What is the student lifestyle like in Madrid?

Since transport is very cheap (20 €/month all zones and transports), the student lifestyle is very active. In terms of university, there are different campuses being the most famous in Moncloa. University is hard (although it depends on which degree you have chosen)but there's always time for partying and university parties are quite big.

How much does it cost to live in Madrid?

Madrid is not a cheap city to live. You're expecting to pay 300-400 €/month without accommodation. Comparing different cities in Spain, Madrid is quite expensive but you can always find good deals. Other places like England in general are much more expensive to live.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Madrid? Is there any advice you can give?

It depends on the place you want to live in. Normally accommodation is not an issue.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Food is one of its great things. Well, Spanish food in general is fantastic and you will be able to find dishes like paella, Spanish omelette and all kinds of pasta, the "cocido madrileño" is the typical dish along with squid ring sandwiches(which are my favourites and the best I've tried).

What places would you recommend visiting in Madrid?

There are the usual places like El Prado, Reina Sofia, Thyseen (the museum triangle). Many people often see sunsets at the Debod temple (an authentic Egyptian gift at the top of a hill right next to Plaza España and I would recommend (if you have more time)taking a walk to Malasaña (where the underground Madrid was before) and Chueca. Also the Sorolla museum is an absolute must for an art lover located in the painter's antique house. Last but not least, you can go to Lavapies where you'll find great vibes and cultural diversity.

Is it good to eat out in Madrid? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is. Is not difficult to find good homemade dishes (although for students is hard due to the higher price). A normal menu in Madrid is 10-12€ which includes dessert or coffee. I recommend going for secondary streets so the price is not so high.

Is the nightlife good in Madrid? Where is good to go?

Nightlife in Madrid is great. Depending on what you're looking for, you can go to Malasaña (it's like the trendy area now), Huertas (it has amazing bars with live music), Sol (you just have to wait for someone who offer places), Lavapies and Chueca (it's the gay place and there's always good vibe).

What advice would you give future students heading to Madrid?

If you are new in Madrid, don't hesitate to talk to anyone for advice, we are normally very glad to help, specially foreigners.

Be careful with prices and take good walks to know how to move. It's not difficult but it takes a little!
