Experience in Madrid, Spain, by Anastasia

Why did you decide to go to Madrid, Spain?

I was studying international relations in my undergrad and I was specializing in Spain. Naturally, I learned the language and I was greatly looking forward to practising it in Spain. I travelled a lot throughout the country, I've been to Andalusia, Galicia, Valencia, Catalonia, but always on vacation and I'd never really been to the centre of Spain. I finally decided that it would be very interesting and useful to come study in Madrid.

How long does your scholarship last? How much money are you receiving?

The scholarship lasts one semester (October 2015-February 2016). I'm receiving 200, 000 rubles, which is approximately 600 euros.

What is the student life like in Madrid?

It's very friendly, even though at the beginning it was difficult for me to get used to an entirely different atmosphere. This being said, the vast majority of students and teachers were friendly and they helped me on various occasions.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Madrid to other students?

Without a doubt! It's worth it to come not only for the studies, but also for the beautiful and unforgettable city.

How is the local food?

It's delicious, and relatively cheap.

Was it difficult finding housing in Madrid?

Not at all, I found housing through the agency Aluni.net. I had shown interest in an offer, I contacted the owner and everything worked itself out pretty quickly and easily.

How much does it cost to live in Madrid?

I paid €280 per month for a room in a very good flat in the urban centre. It took me four minutes to walk to the bus stop; the bus took me directly to my university. It also took me 25 minutes to walk to the Royal Palace and all the points of interest.

How is it going with the language? Did you take language courses at your university?

It was a bit difficult at the beginning, but not very much. I came with a level of Spanish that was relatively high. In Spain I have not taken any Spanish courses, every conversation is my own language course :)

What is the best way to get to Madrid from your city?

By plane. I live in Moscow, so there's not really any other way to get there.
