Erasmus Experience in Madrid, Spain by Mani
Why did you choose to go to Madrid, Spain?
It was the only place that I could manage to get classes for my Spanish Culture and Literature minor but also because I wanted to venture out into the world.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I got 0 scholarships and I'm paying for everything out of my own pocket.
What is the student lifestyle like in Madrid?
It's different because as time passes by you feel like you own this city. In a sense that you become part of the city, you know the streets, you know all the areas, you know what metro to take without thinking twice, you know who and where people are, you become friends with bartender in your local bar.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Madrid to other students?
Personally, I would tell people (especially Americans) to prepare for people to be rude towards you and blunt. I have a feeling it's because I'm American that people here haven't been the nicest. I would recommend it but I would caution people of the reality.
What is the food like?
The food is ok. It's not the best, America has better food.... Mexican food!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Madrid?
Yes it did! I had issues with the people that owned the house I was living in, so I was homeless for a couple weeks until I found another place.
How much does it cost to live in Madrid?
A lot!
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I'm Mexican so no, it was not hard at all. It's hard when people speak really fast, then I have to ask them to kindly repeat it.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Madrid from your city?
Airplane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Madrid?
Yes of course, Malasana is the best for young students.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Madrid?
The Chinese restaurant in the Plaza de España parking lot!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Lavapies for their Indian food and African culture.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Madrid in the future?
Learn Spanish.
