Ana's Experience in Madrid, Spain
What attracts you to living in Madrid? Do you recommend it? What's it like?
Being the capital of Spain, Madrid is a great city where you can always find something that suits your tastes and interests. It's also very well connected with the rest of Spain, so it's not difficult to leave the busy city and visit other places.
What's the student lifestyle like in Madrid?
There are lots of students and from all over the world, but beyond the university, you probably won't notice such an environment. There are countless places to go out, where you can get together with friends and meet new people.
How much does it cost to live in Madrid?
It's usually pretty expensive.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Madrid? Do you have any advice?
It depends on where you want to live. I study at the European University and there is a lot of accommodation here (although it is quite expensive I have to say). As for Madrid city, my friends have told me that you can look through lots of places before you find one you like so it's best to start looking well in advance.
What's the country's food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Spanish cuisine is undoubtedly excellent. My favourite dishes are Valencian ones like paella or baked rice (since my hometown is in the Valencian Community). Although I'm afraid I can't name any dishes specific to Madrid.
What places do you recommend visiting in Madrid?
The Temple of Debod, the Royal Palace, Almundena Cathedral, Retiro Park, the Prado Museum, Gran Vía, Sol, the Plaza Mayor... in short, all the most touristy things in the city. I also recommend strolling through the Malasaña neighbourhood and visiting both the San Ildefonso market, which is located in Fuencarral and San Miguel. Also go up to some of the rooftop bars where you'll find great views of the city, such as Círculo de Bellas Artes where you can enter for free with your student card.
What about eating out in Madrid? What are your favourite places?
Lateral, La Tita Rivera, the markets mentioned above, and the bars and restaurants in the Plaza de España area.
Which places do you recommend for nightlife in Madrid?
Zoo, the pubs in the Malasaña neighbourhood, Kapital, Mondo...
Do you have any advice for future students in Madrid?
Make the most of Madrid because it's a city that has a lot to offer. I would also recommend taking advantage of its central location to travel to different parts of Spain.
