Akza's Erasmus Experience in Madrid, Spain
Why did you choose to go to Madrid, Spain?
It's a city with lots of interesting things to see, both culturally and gastronomically. It's relatively cheaper than other countries, the people are very friendly, and there are lots of parties; Madrid never sleeps. It's an incredible city to visit and it's even more so as a place to live.
How long does your grant last? How much money do you receive as financial support?
I didn't receive any financial support.
What is student life like in Madrid?
It's very different to what I am used to in Mexico (I am Mexican). But, in general, the people are very nice and you make friends easily here.
Would you recommend the city and the university you study at in Madrid to other students?
Of course I would, especially the city itself. UCM (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) is very good, but the European education system again is very different to what I am used to, but that's not to say that it's bad. It also depends on the degree or in which department you are going to study in.
What is the food like in Spain?
It's very good. Spain is not just chorizo and bread, it's actually much more than that. Don't limit yourself when it comes to food, you will find lots of interesting things that form part of the Spanish cuisine.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Madrid?
A little bit, but I first stayed in a hostel. The very owners of the place approached us and asked if we wanted to live there from then on. The people were so kind that we didn't even have to think twice about it.
How much does it cost to live in Madrid?
It depends on how much you want to spend. I was spending around 25€ each week on food alone. And, with regards to nightlife, well, it can vary depending on the person and the places frequented.
What is the language like? Did you go to any language classes at the university?
I am from Mexico, so I had no problems at all with the language.
What is the cheapest way to get to Madrid from your city?
Well, I think the only option to get to Madrid is by plane, as my country, never mind my city, is in another continent.
Which places do you recommend for nightlife in Madrid?
Nightlife? Without a doubt, I recommend La Joy Eslava and Gabana; these are my preferred places to go to.
And eating out in Madrid? Can you mention your favourite places?
El Tigre! It's a cider place where you can eat as many tapas as you want and just pay the cost of your drink. I recommend it without a shadow of a doubt, aside from the fact that it is very cheap.
And cultural hotspots?
The museums are the most important things that you must not forget to visit. There are special hours that only foreigners or students can benefit from where entrance is free. The main museums are the Reina Sofía, the Prado, and the Thyssen.
Is there any advice that you want to give to future students in Madrid?
Enjoy every minute of your stay in a different country. Get to know it and live in it like you were authentic citizens of Madrid. And, don't forget.... go to a football match.
