Experience in Maastricht, Netherlands by Michelle

What is it like to live in Maastricht? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I don't want to brag, but I believe it is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been, with its old bridges and history. Living in Maastricht is rather easy with in every 'neighbourhood' a supermarket and transport is taken care off very well. However, the people in Maastricht, who are from Maastricht, are rather chauvenistic, although they will help you the best they can since they are very friendly.

What is the student lifestyle like in Maastricht?

There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of students in Maastricht and there are a lot of student associations. Tuesday and Thursday are the nights that most students go out, on Thursday there are clubs which are open until 06:00.

How much does it cost to live in Maastricht?

It's not very expensive, at least not for me, since I am a Dutch citizen, it's way more cheap than the bigger cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Maastricht? Is there any advice you can give?

It is not difficult since there exists a facebookpage for accommodation called Rooms/Kamer/Zimmer in Maastricht.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Everything you need, you will find in the supermarkets. I don't necessarily have a favourite dish.

What places would you recommend visiting in Maastricht?

Definitely the city centre, the Vrijthof, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-Plein, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Church.

Is it good to eat out in Maastricht? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

There is a restaurant called Kiwi, which is especially for students, since it's very cheap.

Is the nightlife good in Maastricht? Where is good to go?

Yes, you can go to the "Allah" (Allah Benûr, but students call it Allah), and to the Feestfabriek, both are open till 6:00 on Thursday, and there are other cafés like The Clinique, Twee Heren, the FM, the Défilé, all are very nice to go out.

What advice would you give future students heading to Maastricht?

Try to mingle. Join a student association, go out, try to learn the basics of Dutch, if you don't know it yet.
