What is it like to live in Lusaka? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Lusaka is a very vibrant city but also has a laid back feel.There is lots to see and do and I would recommend visiting it at least once. The people are friendly and helpful, the city itself is growing rapidly and we are looking forward to developing along with it!
What is the student lifestyle like in Lusaka?
There is a fairly large population of foreign students in Lusaka. I have noticed that some foreign students prefer to rent in cottages/rooms with local families (I think for the experience and to learn the local languages) and others stay in budget guesthouses. How much does it cost to live in Lusaka?
It depends on where you stay and the type of lifestyle you lead. A single person can comfortably live on $800 - $1000 a month including housing, food and transport.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Lusaka? Is there any advice you can give?
It is fairly easy to find decent accommodation in Lusaka but depends on the season. Housing is difficult to find during the wet season (November to April), and also during the summer months when Zambia welcomes most tourists. So planning ahead is essential
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Lusaka is the capital city of Zambia and is very cosmopolitan. Almost all embassies and consulates accredited to Zambia are located in Lusaka and so the city hosts people from different countries. We have restaurants around the city that cater to international clientele.Indian, Lebanese and local traditional food are my favorites.
What places would you recommend visiting in Lusaka?
The Lusaka National Museum is a nice place to start for a brief glimpse into the history of Zambia. Henry Tayali Gallery in the Showgrounds and the flea markets at Kabwata Cultural Village, and Arcades Shopping mall every Sunday for art. Lusaka National Park -14km outside Lusaka for some game viewing is always a treat.
Is it good to eat out in Lusaka? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Knowing where to go for good food is key :-). I live in the Ibex Hill area and there are several spots in and around the area. The Orange Tree Public House on Twin Palm Road, The Dill on Kabulonga Road,15 Latitude off Leopards Rd,and restaurants at Crossroads Mall and Centro Mall all have great food choices
Is the nightlife good in Lusaka? Where is good to go?
Lusaka has a vibrant nightlife and there is never a dull moment for the adventurous. There are many night clubs in the Northmead and Longacres areas,and there are always festivals and concerts around the city.
What advice would you give future students heading to Lusaka?
Don't forget to take your anti malaria tablets and sunscreen. And just like any country, beware of your surroundings and do not flash cash around. All major credit cards and Visa cards are accepted everywhere. Be open minded and enjoy the experience!
