Experience in London, United Kingdom by Lara
What is it like to live in London? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I love living in London. It's so easy to get around and there are endless secret spots to discover in and around the city. There are parks and shopping opportunities all in one big world city which is rare.
What is the student lifestyle like in London?
I would warn people that London is pricey for students. I would recommend getting a cheap bike as it's more financially and environmentally friendly and there are bike lanes everywhere. There are always student reductions at events in the city whether you want to go clubbing, the cinema or other cultural events.
How much does it cost to live in London?
It really depends but the rent in London is around £400 to £600 per month and that is if you live centrally. Many people live further out to avoid expensive rent but they travel costs also add up.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in London? Is there any advice you can give?
There are so many websites to find accommodation, and the universities are always willing to advise you. I found a flat through a friend. If you have contacts it helps a lot.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
As London is a city of multiculturalism, you can get anything from Chinese stir fry to a good old kebab within a few metres. The restaurants are wonderful but pricey and there are other street food market places where you can get truly unique bites for not a lot of money. My favourite place to eat is the Greek falafel restaurant, Gaby's, just off Trafalgar Square.
What places would you recommend visiting in London?
Definitely Southbank, the BFI is situated there and you get amazing sky line views. I would also recommend visiting Victoria Park and Brick Lane in East London.
Is it good to eat out in London? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Eating out is so difficult as it's hard to decide where to go! Curry restaurants are best on Brick Lane whereas more fancy gastronomy is found towards Covent Garden and Soho.
Is the nightlife good in London? Where is good to go?
The nightlife is very good. I would recommend Shoreditch as it's very diverse in music tastes and not as expensive as central London. Plus, it's very easy to travel by bus or tube in the night so no worrying about getting home safe.
What advice would you give future students heading to London?
I'd say don't worry too much about moving to London, just enjoy the overwhelming experience and take advantage of the many cultural opportunities and make sure you surround yourself with positive vibes!
