Experience in London (United Kingdom), by Julia
What is it like to live in London? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It could be expensive if you do not have family or friends to stay with. However if you are prepared to stay on the edge of Greater London rather than Central London accommodation is much cheaper. Besides public transport is very good, some train station run 24 hours, so one does not need to fear being stranded after a night out.
Most towns in London have a vibrant night life, for example Stratford. There is always something to do if you want to get out and about. I would highly recommend moving to London.
What is the student lifestyle like in London?
It can be calm or socially hectic, it all depends on the student. University of West London is a good place to study, it is close to Central London and airport.
How much does it cost to live in London?
With the weakening of the pound overseas students may find it relatively cheaper to live here. You would probably find there is very little left at the end of each month with budget of £ 1, 200.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in London? Is there any advice you can give?
If one goes to the usual high street estate agents, it is easy to find accommodation. It is difficult if you are on a tight budget as you may need to provide an upfront deposit. London has a very high percentage of under occupied properties. So maybe try house sharing, it is very important that you think of safety though. Also try house share/house sitting, quite often some older folks live abroad during the cold months, so you would have the place all to yourself.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I like Sushi and plain English food, like fish and mash/chips. The variety is extensive as this is a cosmopolitan city, which caters to everyone.
What places would you recommend visiting in London?
If you are in London take a tour bus ride and river cruise to see all of London. Hop on the cable car on a clear day and travel from Docklands into the heart of London. Also on a clear day take a spin on the London Eye a huge Ferris wheel, where you will enjoy a panoramic view of London. There is just so much to see and do, pace yourself though, as you'll want to do well in your studies.
Is it good to eat out in London? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
One can pretty much find whatever they fancy. I find everything in Stratford from the Michelin rated to Cafes. The best thing though, is to buy food from local High Streets it's much cheaper and just as good. You would find that most high streets and shopping centres have good eateries.
Is the nightlife good in London? Where is good to go?
Everything you could possibly want to do is here in London including: clubs, theatres, museums, bars, cruises. So yes, the night life is good. Stratford is a good place to visit, it has everything close to each other and transportation links fantastic. This area is becoming more vibrant as a legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games. Greenwich Town is good too, The 02 is sited there, where shows are always on the schedule. In the summer, park parties (Hyde Park) are prevalent, as are open air theatres. The choices are endless...
What advice would you give future students heading to London?
For the first year, at least, live with a family. Not necessarily a young family with children as you'll need peace and quiet to study. University student accommodation is very expensive. However if money is not an issue, stay in student accommodation for the first year, that way it is easier for you to make friends and hang-out after class.
