Erasmus Experience in London, United Kingdom by Mathijs
Why did you choose to go to London, United Kingdom?
As I could go there for a full year instead of one semester. Which made me experience more of the place, where you never get bored, so many things to see and discover. The way I started was with a not so detailed map and just go where ever you think you are going. You will come across so many places that are interesting..
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
don't remember that exactly, it was rather expensive staying in London and living there. I think i got about 3000 euros for the 8 months i stayed there. May sound like a lot but accommodation is really expensive there.
What is the student lifestyle like in London?
Primarily, it is very British to start with, somehow nice to be between freshers in the beginning, but they grow up as well. But you can enjoy London in every way you want, you don't have to follow others, like student lifestyle has so many different faces in london that you can write a book about it.
Would you recommend the city and the University of London to other students?
Haven't been to university of london though, but the city is awesome, the music scene is massive there, so much to discover.
What is the food like?
Be open minded and try anything you can imagine, also the british stuff because they all have it in London
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in London?
I wouldn't recommend to pay before you even can have a look at your flat, though the university had to provide me from accommodation, so can't tell you much about that.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Free language courses at uni.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to London from your city?
Eurostar is the easiest, took me about 5 hours door to door.
Eurolines (coach) would be cheaper but takes way more time.
If you go by car it is profitable as you are traveling with at least 4 people.
Take ferry or train (with car) is big fun. I wouldn't go by plane as there is so much more waiting time.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in London?
go east-end or dalston, it is really nice there different small clubs with world class DJ's
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in London?
Breakfastclub, funny decorated and nice food they have
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Too many to name, the streets are already worth looking around
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to London in the future?
Don't choose for another city
