Erasmus Experience in London, United Kingdom by Lucy
Why did you choose to go to London, United Kingdom?
I fell in love with the city ages ago and I really wanted to experience it.
Being a tourist in London is great, but living there? Aaah, 100 times better! It gets more and more interesting each day and it becomes one of the best experiences in your life :)
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I was recieving Erasmus schoolarship for 4months max., and that was 600€ pcm. Which is almost enough to cover your accomodation, so my parents needed to help me out big time...
What is the student lifestyle like in London?
Well I was doing an internship so I wasn't acctually a student since I was working every day.. But during weekends it's craz, fun spontanious and expensive. There's so many different cultures and nationalities you never feel like a foreigner, you just feel like a Londoner (quote from a French friend ;) )
Would you recommend the city and the University of London to other students?
I would most definetly recommend the city to everyone, no matter if they don't know it, I think everyone can find something suitable for them in the city. I can't say anything about the University since I wasn't studying there.
What is the food like?
The food is great, very diverse and different to my country, which was amazing, I started distinguishing between different asian cousines when I lived in London, which wasn't really my area up until then :P
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in London?
Yea, it cost me a weekly rent, which was about 130pound, cause I didn't have the time to find the flat on my own and I found it through some kind of student agency.
How much does it cost to live in London?
A lot! About 600pounds rent bills incl. if you want your own room, 80pounds student oyster card for zones 1&2, about 300pounds for food if you're willing to cook at home and than everything that comes with living in London, parties, experiences, trips, beers, admition fees, occasional new clothes... I'd say about 1200pounds a month if you don't live like a cheap.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?
I don't know i didn't have troubles with that before moving anyway.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to London from your city?
Wizzair flights from Ljubljana to London, it takes 2 hours and it costs approximately 70€ return.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in London?
Ehm, depends on what you like. You can go to Camden for a jam session, to Dalston to a Jazz club, Brixton for an afrobeat concert, night clubs to rave, Bricklane to chill or just random pub to talk, London has lots to offer and you never get bored :)
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in London?
For me food markets were really good, you can find some small daily ones just round the corner of your office or you can go to Bricklane market on a Sunday or Southbank market by the Thames.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
My favourite is Tate modern, even the building itself is amazing.
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to London?
Go out as much as you can and meet as many people as you can. London's tough but you fall in love with it very soon and you don't wanna leave or in my case you wanna move back as soon as possible! (hopefully next month:) )
