Erasmus Experience in London, United Kingdom by Catalina
Why did you choose to go to London, United Kingdom?
I always wanted to come to the UK. London is an amazing city, there is so much to see, just by spending the day walking around the streets you will discover new things. I had heard so much about it before I came I really wanted to experience it, its all true!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I am here finishing my second CEMS term abroad, I receive no money from school.
What is the student lifestyle like in London?
Lots of parties, hitting the pub at whatever hour, lots and lots of restaurants to try...
Would you recommend the city and the University of London to other students?
Yes!
What is the food like?
Everyone says English food is very bad but it is absolutely not true! Try delicious pub food accompanied by a bulmers apple cider and you wont regret it.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in London?
Very hard to find an affordable place in London, I ended up renting a place on the outside of London so I had to travel 45 min to an hour to get to school in the center, you have to measure your options because transport is also expensive.
How much does it cost to live in London?
I pay a cheap rent of 600 pounds a month, plus another 600 pounds for food and doing stuff you should be just fine (If you really want to go out in London every weekend or so you may need a bit more).
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in London?
It depends on what you are up for, if you are looking for a big late night I would recommend Ministry of Sound, Egg London, Fabric or Koko. If your are more up to hitting the pubs and cool bars I recommend the Shoreditch area.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in London?
There are many food chains in London where you can choose from but I would for sure recommend the pub chain Wetherspoons for their good price/quality ratio.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
All big city museums are free in London, my favorite is the National History Museum and the British Museum. London parks are amazing, I keep finding new spots and corners at Hyde Park because it's so big, and the roses at Regent's Park are just blooming. I would recommend visiting the Tower of London, it's not free but it's worth it.
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to London?
The weather is really not as bad as everyone says it is, and if it rains, don't just stay home, go to the local pub and enjoy a pint, the whole town/neighborhood will probably be there too!
