Erasmus Experience in London, United Kingdom
Why did you choose to go to London, United Kingdom?
My course at university is English Language, and what better country than the UK to improve my skills?
How long did the grant last? How much money did you receive in support?
Approximately 9 months. You receive more or less depending on the Autonomous Community; I didn't have any money issues, though I didn't squander.
What's the student atmosphere like in London?
It also depends on the host university. At Royal Holloway we were all students, and the area was basically all related to the students.
Would you recommend the university and the city of London to other students?
Yes and a lot. It's an experience that you must live through in order to be able to evaluate for yourself.
How is the country's food?
Luckily I didn't eat out a lot, since I made use of my own kitchen and prepared typical Spanish dishes. But in general it tends not to be very good with too much grease and oil.
How did you find accommodation?
Through my host university.
What are the accommodation costs? What are the costs in general?
For the whole year, I paid €5, 300, which included electricity, water, internet (not wi-fi), a kitchen and bathroom shared with 3 other people...
The costs, in general, are high - taking into account that I went from Spain. Those who came from Germany didn't notice a big difference.
How was the language? Did you go to any courses at the university?
In general I didn't have any problems at the start. Getting used to it tends to be difficult, but you get used to it quickly (if you know the language, of course).
What is the most economical way of going to London from your city?
The train is as economical as it is worthwhile.
Which places would you recommend for a night out in London?
It depends on each individual's taste in music, but I would never return to the Ministry of Sound. Places I would recommend are Pacha, Tiger Tiger, La Pollera Colorá (a place where you can dance salsa, merengue, bachata... for the whole night... ).
And places to eat in London? Can you name your favourite places
The favourites were McDonald's, Burger King, Pizza Hut (with their buffet days). I couldn't allow myself to eat at expensive restaurants as an Erasmus student. :P
And cultural places?
Everything. I'd recommend that you get lost in the streets of London and walk and walk. You find amazing places. And if you're really lazy, you can go to Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Westminster Abbey, London Bridge, the Tower of London, St Paul's Cathedral, all of London's parks...
Any advice you want to give to future students in London?
Be water, my friends. Do whatever you want at the time you like.
