Erasmus Experience in London, the United Kingdom by Julia
Why did you choose to go to?
Because Imperial College is one of the best universities to study physics.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I went as an Erasmus student, so I had a grant for 9 months, I got €350 a month.
What is the student lifestyle like in?
They organise a lot of activities in the university itself, joining a club is always a good way to meet people, but there's a lot of atmosphere in general.
Would you recommend the city and the university of to other students?
Yes.
What is the food like there?
It's not that good. It's hard to find good food and essential ingredients. They have good food, but it's very expensive, and you have to go to very specific places to get it. Just on one side of London Bridge, there's the Borough Market, where you can buy good produce, but it's expensive.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in?
The university takes care of it, I stayed in one of its residences.
How much does it cost to live in?
If you are looking for a room in a house, you can find some for £500.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?
I went on a two month course at the university, but there was a lot of variety and a few different class cycles, so you could attend classes for the whole year.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to from your home city?
Ryanair.
Where would you recommend for a night out in?
The Soho area is very nice, there are a lot of different little bars and the atmosphere is good. Camden has some very cool bars, although it's a bit more of an alternative area. For clubs, there's KOKO in Camden, Corsica Studios and Ministry of Sound in Elephant & Castle, and there's Fabric, too. There are also salsa places, in Camden and Charing Cross.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The museums are free, which is very interesting. Musicals, shows... it's a question of personal taste.
Do you have any advice for students coming to in the future?
Make the most of it, because it goes by quickly! Go to Camden, you'll never be bored there!
