Erasmus Experience in Lodz, Poland by Luisa
Why did you choose to go to Lodz, Poland?
I was on an Erasmus internship programme and the main reason was to go to work in MOOMOO architects, so it was not due to the city or the country, but with the office, but of course I think Poland is an affordable country that I did not know and it seemed very interesting to me.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I was in Lodz for three months and the money I received was about 300 €/month. It was not enough to cover my expenses but I was living in a flat by myself, I think that dorms are quite cheap...
What is the student lifestyle like in Lodz?
I am not very sure, because my internship took place in summer so there were not a lot of students at this season.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Lodz to other students?
I can recommend the city, though it is quite different and sometimes strange. I don't know much about the university.
What is the food like?
Mainly it is very cheap, but I am from Spain and I really missed Spanish food. You will love soups probably.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Lodz?
Not so much. I found this flat, a studio apartment, on the internet before arriving.
How much does it cost to live in Lodz?
My stuio cost 1500 PLN/month (less than 400€/month). But if you go to a dormitory it will be really cheap.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The language is very very difficult and I don't know about courses in the University but I guess so.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Lodz from your city?
By plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Lodz?
Off Piotrkowska.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Lodz?
- Drukarnia in Off Piotrkowka is a good option.
- Piknik is also a good place.
- I heard about Pomodoro, people say it is the best pizza in Lodz.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
I had not much time and I must say that in summer the cultural program is not so wide, but I definitely recommend to go to the opera theatre.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Lodz in the future?
Be ready for a different city with a changing weather from hour to hour, but you could meet nice people and an interesting city that is being renewed.
