Erasmus Experience in Lodz, Poland by Chantal
Why did you choose to go to Lodz, Poland?
I had choose Lodz because it was the only city in Poland suitable for my studies, and I had choosen Poland because the English language, the culture and to try the cold weather.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I will stay here for 5 months (from October to February). I will receive 230€ per month, divided in two rate (half during the Erasmus, half after).
What is the student lifestyle like in Lodz?
Classes during the day, normally with some days free. Go out during the night every day is possible. Visit museum or new city during the weekend.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Lodz to other students?
Yes, for the atmosphere and also because it is perfect for travel to all the countries of the East Europe.
What is the food like?
The typical Polish food is awesome and very cheap, but is very easy to find food from the other countries, like Mexican, Greek, Italian, Japanese and more!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Lodz?
I find my room in a shared flat with the help of an agency. The monthly rent is 180€. The first month I gave 90€ more for the agency cost.
How much does it cost to live in Lodz?
It is possible to live on 270€ in a very "relaxed" way, without be careful to all the outgoings.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The Polish is very difficult, but all the youth know English. There are courses available to learn it.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Lodz from your city?
By plane, but from Milan to Warsaw, and then take a bus.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Lodz?
In Piotrkowska street it is possible to find wonderful pubs, clubs and restaurants for every taste. But I recommend in particular the zone OFF of Piotrkowska.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Lodz?
In Piramowicza n 13 there is a very small place that prepares great pierogi!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Lot of historical museums about Lodz and Poland, Jewish and Catholic cemetery, Radegast station (about Holocaust), botanic garden (especially during the cold days), planetarium, and more...
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Lodz in the future?
Find a shared flat, not dormitory. Wait to buy your warm jacket and shoes there. Learn the emergency number. Taxis are cheap. Try all the clubs.
